I Found The Key!
Try as I might I never seemed to find a way to get more of the 4 Squares into my life.
The ’4 Squares’ is a concept that was coined by the late Florence Scovel Shinn in her ground breaking book; ‘The Game of Life and How to Play it’
Shinn speaks of the four things we human beings need… not a ‘want’… to become happy, well rounded, and satisfied people. These four are considered paramount to the happiness of the species, and they are as follows; Health, Wealth, Love, and Perfect Self Expression.
“So your saying these are basic human needs?” Yes.
Hmmm… it’s interesting to ponder these four items, isn’t it?… What, with nobody having them and all. We’d consider an individual damned lucky to obtain even one of them!
If these 4 squares are so basic to human happiness why don’t we see them in droves all around us, on the daily, and more importantly, why don’t we have it? (Couldn’t we just start with 2 of them and go on from there?… sort of a test drive… Oh, and can we pick which 2 to start with?)
That brings me to this little key I found, and I believe it may be the key to the undoing of much of life’s little Crappinesses… eses.
Shall I continue?
It’s the key called… Gratitude.
(just shut up for a minute and keep reading)
I told you it was simple… or is it? Yes and No.
Let’s get clear however, I’m not talking about some ‘Oprah Feel-Good Gratitude Day’ kind of gratitude, I’m talking about ‘Flipping Profound Genuine Gratitude Without End Amen’!
You may feel you have this one down, I really believed that I was a grateful person too… uh, until I read this book, and man, I was a whiny complainer.
The book I’m referring to, that is a ‘must-have’ sort of book for me and also for you because I said so, is ‘The Magic’ by Rhonda Byrne.
Now don’t get all flustered because it’s by the author of ‘The Secret’, I’m not a big fan of the LOA’ers either, well… not in the typical ‘pretend positive-crystal carrying-go ahead and die cause we ain’t get’n no medicine’ style.
I must now admit my respect for this author, have you read her last book; ‘The Power’? Very good read! (God, I feel like I’ve just admitted to stalking Justin Bieber!)
The Law of Attraction is misunderstood, it is the Law of Love in its most powerful expression: Gratitude.
I am a Universe lover, whatever that means, with all its mysteries. I don’t know much, but I do know that I don’t know and that’s a good start.
Anyway, what’s cool about this book is that it’s set in a 28 day reading and exercise format so you can really get a feel for what being truly grateful means and getting us to focus on it every day until it becomes habit. I am not one to follow rules and such so I read it my own way, which is any way I want to.
So many of Byrne’s words just stick with you and there’s nothing new about them, she simply has a way of making you see things differently, it’s very impactful. (is that a word? -is now)
Here are some key reminders from the book that will stick with you;
“Whoever has gratitude will be given more, and he will have an abundance. Whoever does not have gratitude, even that which he has will be taken from him.”
“Whether it’s a relationship in turmoil, financial pressure, a lack of health, or problems in a job, negative situations arise because of a lack of gratitude over a long period of time. If we are not grateful for each thing in our lives, we are unintentionally taking those things for granted. Taking things for granted is a major cause of negativity, because when we take things for granted we are not giving thanks in return, and we stop the magic happening in our life. Just as giving thanks to others will always lead to our life magically increasing, so must taking things for granted always lead to our life decreasing.”
- The Magic- pg 77
Practice gratitude every day… not kidding.
Be genuinely grateful for Every-Thing and Every-Body, and see what happens in the 4 squares of your life.
